International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed annually on November 25. This day aims to raise awareness of the global issue of violence against women and girls and to promote efforts to end such violence in all forms. Violence against women is one of the most prevalent human rights violations affecting 1 in 3 women worldwide.

The focus of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence often centres on women. However, it is important to remember that violence against women also profoundly impacts children, especially those who witness domestic violence. For children in foster care, the impact upon them can be far reaching on their emotional and mental well-being for years to come.

At Vineyard Fostering Agency, we believe in creating safe, nurturing environments for children affected by domestic violence and foster carers play a crucial role in their recovery. Children do not have to be directly harmed for the emotional toil to take its toll. Witnessing violence can be devastating. Research highlights children who grow up in violent households are at a higher risk of anxiety, depression, developmental delays and intergenerational cycles of abuse. Children entering foster care due to domestic violence need stability and time to heal. These children require foster families who can provide not only a safe space but also understanding, patience, and support to help them overcome their trauma. Foster care can provide a safe place for young people escaping unsafe environments.

Vineyard Fostering ensure that foster families are equipped with the training and resources needed to support children who have endured such trauma. Through therapeutic care, consistent routines, and compassionate relationships, foster carers can help these children rediscover trust and rebuild their self-esteem. Foster carers often become beacons of hope for these children, offering emotional security that enable children to express their feelings without fear. They are positive role models who show what healthy relationships and families look like.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we are reminded that addressing domestic violence is not just about supporting survivors—it is also about protecting the next generation. Vineyard Fostering is committed to this mission, working closely with social workers and other professionals to ensure that children affected by violence are not left behind. Through fostering, we have the power to break cycles of abuse and create brighter futures for children and families. But this requires a collective effort. Whether you are considering becoming a foster carer, volunteering, or simply raising awareness, every action counts.
